Seven out of 10 Americans consider cooking and eating to be the sixth love language.

A poll of 2,000 Americans who cook regularly revealed that 80% use food to comfort themselves after a stressful day, and 65% use food to comfort others.

Ice cream was named the most popular comfort food (34%), followed by pizza (31%), pasta (24%), burgers (22%) and grilled cheese (19%).

More than three-quarters (78%) believe cooking is a calming task for them, and it ranks as the top activity (65%) people do when they need to relieve stress, the second most popular activity More than twice as many as the big choice: cleaning (31%).

People also reduce stress by doing household chores such as gardening (30%), doing laundry (25%) and folding laundry (23%).

The research, commissioned by Noom and conducted by OnePoll, found that 90% of people experience some level of stress by the end of the day. More than a quarter (28%) claim to always or often feel stressed at the end of the day.

People think stress at the end of the day is often caused by work (40%), to-do lists (32%) and social life (28%).

89% said mental health is important to them, which explains why 81% try to ensure they are free from stress and worry while sleeping.

Four out of five people find themselves reflecting on their day at least occasionally while doing their favorite daily tasks, which were found to reflect stress-relieving tasks.

Respondents said they enjoy tasks such as cooking (80%), cleaning (43%), doing laundry (41%), gardening (39%) and folding clothes (34%).

Dr. Andreas Michaelides, director of psychology at Noom, says it’s easy to find tasks like cooking that are therapeutic and relaxing. It’s a way to focus on a single task, practice reflection, and create something positive that nourishes you and makes you feel good.

The findings revealed that the most effective ways to relieve stress at the end of the day include listening to music (35%), watching TV (34%), taking a bath or shower (34%), eating a comfort meal (23%) or cooking for yourself (twenty one%).

One in five people turn to social media to relieve stress, and respondents also shared the types of social media videos they believe are good or bad for mental health: cooking videos (85%), animal videos (76%) and Music videos (72%) were helpful.

Two-thirds (65%) believe food-related media (such as cooking shows and videos) can be relaxing, and one-third always or often watch food-related media before bed to relax. The average person watches 13 food-related videos per week.

The top food media figures and chefs to watch are Gordon Ramsey (30%), Guy Fieri (24%), Alton Brown (18%) %), Uncle Roger (15%) and Matty Matheson (14%).

Of course, being on social media for too long can start to make you feel exhausted and stressed, Michaelides adds. But it’s interesting to look at what types of content people think is good for their mental health and see that it follows the pattern of food being a key component in relieving stress.
