Study finds healthy plant-based diet reduces diabetes risk by 24%

The study was conducted on 113,097 participants in a large UK cohort study (UK Biobank), with an observation period of 12 years. According to their findings, the reasons behind the anti-diabetic effects of a healthy plant-based diet go well beyond the well-known lower body fat percentage and waist circumference.

“Our study is the first to identify biomarkers of central metabolic processes and organ function as mediators of the health effects of a plant-based diet,” said Tilman Khn, professor of public health nutrition at the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna.
